The town has a varied history, having been the home of the Greeks,
the Romans, the Arabs, and the Normans.

The Black plague of the 16th century left this once thriving city all but deserted,
fortunately its was repopulated and restored in later years.

With its natural scenic beauty and the fascination of its ancient works of art, churches, old palaces, museums with archaeological and scientific remains of great value, with its streets and its lava stone alleys, is a real environmental and architectural gem, nestled in the heart of a territory varied and unique at the same time.

This wealth of history gives the town such buildings as an ancient Castle, which now houses a museum.

There is also the Church of Santa Maria, which is built largely out of black lava stone.

Though the town suffered heavy property damage during World War Two, the city was promptly rebuilt to once again showcase its medieval origins.
